Remote observing is the standard operating mode for all IRTF facility instruments. Observers MUST comply with requirements for audio - visual conferencing (with the summit) and instrument operation provided on this page.

New users of IRTF facility instruments should work directly with their support astronomer to arrange an on-line introduction prior to (preferably at least a month before) their first observing session and until they become familiar with the instrument operation.

The Communication Options for Observers lists the remote desktop, video/audio options for remote observers. A working three-button mouse is required. At least one external monitor in addition to a laptop, or two desktop monitors are recommended.

Observers that are already familiar with the instrument can contact their support astronomer to arrange a test of the audio - visual conferencing link and user interfaces, prefereably at least two weeks prior to their observing run.

IRTF remote observing facilities are available at Hale Pohaku, Hilo and Manoa. People who observe remotely from the Hilo or Manoa facilities are responsible for their own food, lodging and transportation.

Users of IRTF facility instruments have the option to observe from the summit, they should indicate this preference on their Application for Observing Time. All observers are required to complete an Observing Requirements Form whether observing remotely or in-person.
