We seek to determine the physical properties of Class 0 and deeply embedded Class I protostars, youngest stars observable in the near-IR. The physical properties are determined through modeling of photospheric lines in the spectra. In this proposal we will conduct a near-IR spectroscopic survey of Class 0 YSOs to find ones with photospheric absorption lines. These objects will then be the subject of a proposal to get high-resolution spectra on a larger telescope. While Class 0 objects are usually only visible in the far-IR to millimeter wavelengths, some are just bright enough at K-band to be within reach of SpeX. Recent progress has been made in understanding the physical properties of Class I YSOs with a combination high resolution spectra and detailed modeling. Now we would like to extend this work to younger objects. For this program we have selected 6 targets that are relatively bright [K<15], but with a low bolometric temperature [< 70 K]. Class 0 YSOs with photospheric absorption lines will then be the subject of future proposals for high resolution K-band spectra on 8-10m class telescopes.
